Project Reveal: Modern Classic Family Home in Los Altos - The Family Room, Dining Nook, and Kid’s Bedroom

This newly built residence in Los Altos was the new home to a family with 2 young children. The client brought me in to help them transform an empty house into an inviting home. They wanted a place that was polished and pulled together but still casual and comfortable for a family. We created a classic, timeless living room and added California casual style to the family room and dining nook. The home office was elevated with darker, masculine tones, and we gave the son a playful and colorful room that could grow with him.

In part 2 of the reveal, read on for how we designed the family room, dining nook, and boy’s bedroom.

The Family Room

The family room was a large open concept space with the dining nook and kitchen. There are large windows and glass doors that let in a lot of natural light. We capitalized on the light and gave this space a California casual look that was cozy and comfortable but still pulled together. The two facing sofas and pair of chairs provide traditional symmetry, while the low profiles and linen fabric makes it casual. We added a rug with lots of cozy texture and hints of blue. The artwork makes a modern but organic statement and ties in the black accents in the room.

Opposite the fireplace wall was a large blank wall where we placed a console table and styled it elegantly but casually with a large round mirror, lamp, and beautiful but functional storage.

The Dining Nook

We kept the dining nook simple and minimalist with a warm and rustic round wood dining table paired with classic bentwood chairs and an oversized pendant. The profiles of these pieces lend interest in a pared down space.

The Boy’s Bedroom

This toddler boy’s bedroom is colorful and playful! We added lots of fun and functional storage like the clear book shelving and bins. The artwork and statement patterned wallpaper bring in more color and creates a lively and classic looking space that will grow with the child for years to come.

Client Testimonial —

“Working with Rosanna has proven to be the best decision we've made for our new home! We have never worked with a professional home designer before, so we were a little nervous about the whole process. But from the very beginning, Rosanna had a vision. She was highly organized and focused. She not only helped us transform our new house into a home, one that is comfortable, elegant, and cohesive, but she saved us a lot of time, energy and money.”
